Victory for the Slain (1942)-- Lofting's second book of verse-- and his only book written expressly for adults-- comprises a single, extended poem on the subject of war. In particular, the Great War veteran and creator of gentle Doctor Dolittle here expresses his hard-won pacifism, asking (rhetorically) where the alleged glories of war are actually to be found. To publish such a work at the height of World War II took a particular kind of daring; notably, this one was released in Britain only.
