Doctor Dolittle and the Secret Lake (1948)-- Lofting's public waited five years for the Moon story to be resolved; they were to wait even longer for the last Dolittle story he would write. In between, the world fought another war of just the sort that the Great War was supposed to End ... and this final book opens with the Doctor in a funk because of the failure of his attempts to promote lunar-style peace by discovering the key to human longevity. Tommy suggests a trip to Africa, where a visit with ancient Mudface the turtle (who had survived Noah's Flood and told the Doctor the tale of it all the way back in Post Office) might yield new insights.
